Consider the eleven pristine glacier-carved ice-blue Finger Lakes, as well as dozens of others not on the “big lake” list, all surrounded by gorges hiding over 1,000 waterfalls, rolling hills with hundreds of vineyards, dozens of white-water streams, rivers, the Erie Canal, Lake Ontario, more than 25 State Parks, a National Forest and a world-famous Wildlife Refuge, making the region itself one singular 9,000 square-mile natural attraction. Amazingly, nearly all of our natural attractions are easily accessible. Sorry, there are a few you might have to hike to, but we didn’t build Mother Nature, we’re just showing her off!

Our “main” attractions you’re probably familiar with…Letchworth State Park, the “grand canyon of the east,” a breathtaking series of chasms and falls you’ll never forget; Taughannock Falls State Park with its knifing 215-foot freefall waterfall; Watkins Glen State Park that includes an incredible gorge with a stunning series of 19 falls and the ice-age formations of Chimney Bluffs on Lake Ontario. Over 300 species of birds and animals find habitat at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. The flock sizes of geese and waterfowl during migration will astound you, and make great photo opportunities. There are well known nature centers open to the public throughout the region, including Lime Hollow near Cortland, Cayuga Nature Center north of Ithaca, Cumming Nature Center near Naples, Tanglewood Nature Center near Elmira and the Waterman Conservation Center in Apalachin. Get up close to our playful penguins and nearly 1,000 other animals at one of America's best mid-sized zoos, Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, part of the Onondaga County Parks.
The Finger Lakes are blessed with so much we wanted to remind you of a few more incredible stops along the way. Ithaca has a stunning “collection” of gorges and falls, in fact it’s famous for it, including Ithaca Falls, enormous at 150 feet high by 175 feet wide! Also Buttermilk Falls State Park and Robert Treman State Park, both offer spectacular falls, hiking trails, and views. Green Lakes State Park in Onondaga County is a pair of glacier-carved lakes noted for a unique deep emerald-green hue.
Traverse the 552-mile long Finger Lakes Trail network, which connects the Catskill Mountains with the Allegheny Mountains. The trail passes through remote areas of the southern Finger Lakes of New York State. For more information www.fingerlakestrail.org |
