One of the region's crown jewels, Letchworth State Park has been dubbed, "The Grand Canyon of the East," for good reason.
Whether you're looking to spend an hour or a week, Letchworth will give you all you bargained for and more. Its rugged beauty, astounding gorge, miles of trails, pools, and shops make the park the perfect destination for virtually anybody. Photographers, outdoorsmen, families, adventurers, and scholars alike will find exactly what they're looking for.
The park comprises 14,350 acres of stunning scenery along the Genesee River, as it plunges over three major waterfalls. Each year the river carves its way deeper into the dramatic cliffs, the tallest of which approach 600 feet. Moreover, the park is as rich in history as it is in beauty. Within its borders stands a restored Seneca Indian Council House and the grave of Mary Jemison, "The White Woman of the Genesee." A small museum specializing in Native American artifacts adds detail to this stunning picture. Of equal historical relevance are the pioneering efforts of William Pryor Letchworth, who devoted his life and estate to protecting this one-of-a-kind landscape at the turn of the century.
The park features 270 electric campsites and over 80 cabins for camping enthusiasts. The park also offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks and tours, a summer lecture series, rafting, ballooning, and horseback riding, along with traditional winter activities.
