25th ANNUAL NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK
CHAMPIONS NATION’S $740 BILLION TRAVEL INDUSTRY
Silver anniversary theme encourages travelers to “Discover Great American Traditions”

Corning, NY (May 12, 2008) – Steuben County joins hundreds of tourism promotion agencies and travel-related businesses nationwide in recognition of the 25th annual National Tourism Week, to be held May 10-18. Designated by Congress and established by presidential proclamation in 1983, the event celebrates the value and scope of the nation’s $740 billion travel and tourism industry, and the economic and social contributions it brings to Steuben County

This year’s theme, “Discover Great American Traditions,” encourages travel to American locales and highlights the role that tourism plays in discovering the icons of a destination.

“Hotels, attractions, restaurants and transportation providers are among the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to our area”, said Peggy Coleman, President of the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau. “This industry generates $219.02 in tax savings for every household in the county and touches our community in countless other ways. National Tourism Week celebrates the people who visit here, the workforce that provides service for them and the economic development created as a result.”

This year, the Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau is celebrating National Tourism Week by sponsoring a coloring contest. 3rd and 4th graders throughout the county will be coloring pictures that represent the many activities that visitors to the area can enjoy. “Whether it’s a farm visit, enjoying our outdoor recreation, visiting our historic landmarks or learning about our heritage in glass, aviation, and agriculture, there are many opportunities in Steuben County to ‘Discover Great American Traditions’”, said Peggy Coleman. Winning classrooms (one 3rd and one 4th grade in each school) will enjoy a pizza party, compliments of the SCCVB, and the winning artwork will be on public display in local businesses.

The Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau was established to promote the tourism industry of Steuben County and stimulate economic growth by attracting visitors, groups, and conferences to the county. The SCCVB is funded primarily by an occupancy tax paid by overnight visitors staying in hotels, motels, and bed & breakfasts.
