CURRENT EXHIBITS AT THE GENEVA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Geneva, N.Y.:  Please include the following information from the Geneva Historical Society in your upcoming calendar listings:

From Steamboat Captain to Winery Host: Summer Work in the Finger Lakes.
The Finger Lakes is noted for its agricultural bounty and physical beauty; both assets contribute to its fame as a tourist destination. This exhibit investigates the question, “Who does the work?” Someone makes the motel beds, pours the wine samples, and plants and harvests the cabbage. Agriculture and tourism are major drivers of the economy in the region, but individuals—who they are and why they work—are often overlooked.
From Steamboat Captain to Winery Host: Summer Work in the Finger Lakes is part of the award-wining
six-museum collaborative project Summer in the Finger Lakes. The exhibit runs through September 2008.

Coming Up on the Seasons: Migrant Farmwork in the Northeast.
Developed for the Cornell University Migrant Program, this bi-lingual exhibition traces the path of the fruits and vegetables we eat, and the lives of the people who grow and harvest them in the Northeastern United States. Excerpts from oral histories and contemporary and historic photographs help visitors understand the historical forces that have shaped farmwork in this region. This exhibit runs through September 2008.

Warren Hunting Smith: Philanthropist, Author, Scholar.
Grand nephew of William Smith, the benefactor of William Smith College, Dr. W. H. Smith was an active member of the Geneva community all of his life. Following his death in 1998, the Geneva Historical Society received a bequest of many of his papers, which detail Dr. Smith’s social circle; his work editing the correspondence of Horace Walpole; and his involvement in such organizations as the Historical Society, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and the Geneva Free Library. Researched by William Smith intern Martyna Boruta, the exhibit consists of primary source documents from the Warren H. Smith Collection that give a glimpse into this very interesting man. Warren Hunting Smith: Philanthropist, Author, Scholar will run through October 2008.

Geneva's Houses of Worship.
Geneva has a long history of religious fervor and diversity which continues to manifest itself in religious buildings both large and small. While some churches have been lost to fire or demolition, most of the buildings still stand, even if their congregations have moved or dissolved. These former places of worship continue to be useful structures and can be spotted throughout the city, their previous uses often obscured and unknown to the average resident. This exhibit is an inclusive look at the history of these religious structures. Geneva's Houses of Worship will run through October 2008.

The Geneva History Room outlines the history of the community using objects and images from the Geneva Historical Society collection.

The Geneva Historical Society Museum is located at 543 South Main Street. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday (Sundays in July and August) 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please call 315-789-5151 or visit www.genevahistoricalsociety.com.
